During National Hunger & Homelessness Week, join Tukwila School District to STUFF THE BUS with FOOD
November 19, 2016, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., TARGET, Southcenter Mall
The Tukwila Weekend SnackPack Program provides food sacks for Tukwila’s elementary school children who meet the criteria for homelessness determined by the McKinney-Vento Act. Most of our McKinney-Vento students depend on school meals to satisfy nutritional needs, so weekends and holidays prove to be a challenge for them.
The SnackPacks provide nutritious single servings of food that students can rely on to keep away hunger over weekends. In 2015-2016 this program served 116 students a week at two elementary schools. Currently, we serve 90 students at three elementary schools and expect this number to increase up to 150.
“Please join us to ‘STUFF THE BUS’ with food for our most vulnerable students,” said Dr. Nancy Coogan, Superintendent, Tukwila School District.
“It is heartbreaking to know that children frequently come to school hungry. That is why we ensure that students are able to eat a nutritious breakfast and lunch each school day. Thanks to the Still Waters’ Tukwila Weekend SnackPack Program and our incredibly generous community, our most vulnerable students have access to nutritious food at weekends and over breaks.”
On November 19, we ask the community to help us STUFF THE BUS with food for the program. Just visit between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 19. Look for the yellow school bus that will be in the parking lot of the Southcenter Target, 301 Strander Blvd., 98188.
To ensure balanced nutrition and food safety, there is a specific list of items needed for the program. The list is included below. Staff and volunteers from Tukwila School District, the City of Tukwila, Still Waters and other organizations will be on hand to provide a list of the foods and quantities that are needed for the program; and to receive your donations. Tax receipts will be provided..
