Thirty-one—that’s the number of Foster High seniors who have been awarded the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship this year. That’s almost the top in the state! (Only five other high schools have more recipients, and each is hundreds of students larger than Foster.) The Opportunity Scholarship was created in 2011 in a partnership between the state Legislature and businesses such as Boeing and Microsoft. This first-of-its-kind program helps Washington students from low- and middle-income households attain bachelor’s degrees in high-demand fields like science, technology, engineering, math, and health care. The scholarship offers up to $22,500 as well as professional development, skills-building workshops, and genuine industry exposure to help increase the rate at which students enter our state’s workforce.
