The Tukwila School District’s strategic plan is a commitment by the entire community to help our children succeed in school and life. Developed with input from hundreds of voices in the 2013-14 school year, the strategic plan outlines a focused set of academic and personal goals for students and the actions we need to take to achieve those goals. The school board holds the superintendent accountable for implementing the strategic plan, and the superintendent makes sure all of the district’s resources, professional development, and programs are aligned with the strategic plan’s goals.
Superintendent Coogan brought together hundreds of stakeholders—including students, parents, employees, and civic, business, service, faith-based, and community leaders—in fall 2013 to brainstorm goals and outline a foundation for the strategic plan. Throughout the winter, educational experts refined that foundation by adding more specific academic targets and practices. In spring 2014, all staff and community members were invited to “listening sessions,” in which they talked directly to the superintendent about their own priorities for students. An online survey was also available for all stakeholders. Out of a broad consensus of those voices, the final strategic plan and accompanying instructional focus emerged in June 2014.

Looking ahead, the Tukwila School District will continue to work with a professional facilitator throughout the coming school years to fully implement the strategic plan; that includes regular progress reports to the school board and community as well as a transparent budget process that aligns resources with the strategic-plan defined work.

- Continuous Academic Growth for Each Student: Each student will make one year’s academic growth each year based on multiple assessments.
- Accelerated growth for under-performing students: Each student in our lowest performing student groups (subgroups) will show at least 1.5 years growth each year in literacy/language arts and mathematics based on multiple assessments.
- Successful Academic Transitions: At least 15 out of 20 students transitioning between levels ( ie. Pre-K to kindergarten, grade 5 to 6, grade 8 to 9, grade 12 and beyond) will meet or exceed standards in all subjects by the end of each grade level.
- Timely Interventions: Reduce by 30% each year the number of students who trigger early-warning indicators of concern (i.e. attendance discipline, and grades).
- Personalized learning plan: Each student in Grades 3-12 will monitor an individualized growth plan developed collaboratively with all relevant stakeholders.
- Tech-savvy, teach-literate: Each student will achieve the state-level technology standards and will graduate as a tech-savvy, tech-literate citizen connected to the real world.
